Puppy Adoption Information

Your Shiloh will be one of the most amazing relationships you will ever have. These exceptional and highly intelligent dogs have been created to be your ultimate companion. Being what they are, they need a lot of attention and inclusion in your life.   We trust that your interest is supported by information and that you have researched Shiloh Shepherds

We breed registered Shiloh Shepherds at Salish Sea Shilohs. We follow the basic requirements and rules set forth by our registry and our club, the ISSDC. Dedicated enthusiasts and breeders have spent lifetimes perfecting this rare breed, working to help minimize crippling hip dysplasia and other common shepherd issues. The Puppy Purchase Application helps us learn about you so we can match the ideal pup to your family.

A Little About Salish Sea Shilohs
Before we learn about you – here’s a bit about us! We fell in love with this breed when we rescued a starving unregistered Shiloh, Boots. It was the richest relationship we had ever experienced with a dog. After that, it has been a long and amazing journey that leads us to this day!  WE breed with a world-wide network of experienced mentors and breeders. Each mating is done with careful genetic study and comparisons. Breeding dogs are tested extensively for temperament and conformation and their hip x-rays, evaluations and other data are collected and used to perfect the breed.

Salish Sea pups are raised inside our home, not in a kennel. They grow up with constant love and tender care, gently raised with encouragement to fully develop as the intelligent, thinking creatures they are. Notes are kept detailing events and adventures, habits, personality development and more. They are intentionally trained to be familiar with household noises, loud music, other animals, lots of different people. They have experienced 7 surfaces by 7 weeks, indoor and outdoor play, and have learned to live with a busy active household, with basic manners.

Pups are wormed at least twice, and, by the time your pup arrives for your care, will have had their first shots and exam. It is strongly recommended you chip your dog.

At 8 weeks old each pup is tested for temperament and conformation. This LER, Litter Evaluation Report, helps determine their qualities and talents and that helps us find the best puppy fit for you and your family.

WHO can be a Shiloh Shepherd Owner?
Not everyone is cut out to be a Shiloh owner! They are very large and exceptionally intelligent, they deserve significant inclusion in your life and thoughtful training. Puppy school or your gentle informed obedience training is essential to give a good start to your pup’s life. This rare breed dog also requires a lot of consistency from you, his owner.
  1. They may NOT be chained or tied up for long periods of time, or left in small cages isolated and alone for more than the briefest possible time.
  2. They must have their hips x-rayed at about 14 months and the results sent to the OFA for evaluation. Your vet will assist with this process, and I can send you the form for them to fill out. On return of the results, a copy must be sent to me for inclusion breeder health database archived by the ISSDC, a database designed to continue the tradition of sound hips.
  3. Pups going as pets MUST be spayed or neutered and the certificate or invoice copy detailing the surgery must be sent to me for the health records. For girls this is ideally no earlier than 2 months past their first heat, or about 14-15 months. Boys should not be neutered until 18 months to 24 months to preserve bone growth.
  4. Shilohs require plentiful and high quality food, including meat. Feeding suggestions and recipes will be provided.
  5. Shilohs need socializing and exercise, including off leash exercise. They need to be part of your daily life and have fun things to do, friends and toys of their own.
  6. If you, through some misfortune, cannot care for your Shiloh, he must be returned to Salish Sea Shilohs at no cost, for re-homing unless you have a loving approved home where he is wanted and happy. The change of ownership information must be supplied to me for registry records. If a Salish Sea puppy or dog is found to be abused or neglected, we will have the dog removed from your home with no refund. Neglect and abuse are not tolerated. If you cannot care for your dog or if you must surrender him, simply call us and we will come and get him or arrange his care and transport. We will always do the best we can for our pups.

Understanding Your Shiloh is Your Companion
We raise these particular puppies to be family members and best friends. These means you commit to a consistent and rewarding relationship with this creature.  If you find these requirements exceed your lifestyle or capacity, consider a less companionable breed.  Our Shilohs are created to be your ultimate companion dog. They are huge, beautiful, brave, protective gentle giants. You may not actually have need of a complex creature like a Shiloh, or the time for.  This is something you need to research and consider on your own before applying.

Cost and Deposit
Puppy prices are agreed on by the registry breeders and ISSDC. Pet puppies cost $2000.00 (includes tax) with a 500.00 deposit required to be placed on our Puppy Wait List. Puppies must be paid for in full before they are released to their new homes.

If You Are Interested In Breeding Puppies
Breeding Puppies cost $2250.00 to $4500.00 and most are co-owned until the first litter is produced unless you are a WSSBA or TSSR breeder purchasing the pup outright. Salish Sea Shilohs will also receive a number of puppies from the first litter or a portion of the stud fees as agreed upon individually. Our mentorship is guaranteed for you if you are a new breeder.

Your stud dog or bitch must, of course, have undergone all the temperament testing and hip x-rays, and met all the registry requirements for him/her to be bred. This includes genetic comparisons in advance of breeding to determine the quality of each match.

We recommend you research the ISSDC & registry websites for more information and that you join the ISSDC if you plan to breed in the future. Even if you do not plan to breed, the ISSDC is a wonderful source of information and community for and about Shiloh shepherds and we recommend it highly to every person who loves a Shiloh. The community of Shiloh owners is entertaining, interesting and very helpful. Supportive members worldwide offer their opinions and experiences on every subject and question. Another rich source of Shiloh information and camaraderie is on Facebook.

When you pick up your puppy, we will provide copies of his/her medical records and a synopsis of the LER testing and notes we collected during their first weeks. As a Shiloh owner you will have access to littermate information and health notices. You are assured of the healthiest and happiest puppy we can possibly raise.

Now that you see the loving intent with which we raise our puppies… on with the application!
